Subject guide

During Years 10 and 11 there are some subjects that everyone has to take, but others are optional - you can choose whether to take them or not.

Information Find out more below:

  • The choices, and the levels at which each subject is offered, are not the same at every school. Check what is available at your school.
  • You should receive an options booklet outlining the subjects that are available at your school. It will be very helpful when considering your subject options, so make sure you get one.
  • Most subjects are assessed on a mixture of coursework and examinations.
  • The level of coursework for each subject may vary between different examining boards.
  • A full programme of GCSEs is normally 7 or 8 subjects.
  • Your school should invite you and your parents/carers to a Key Stage 4 options evening or event.
  • There will be opportunities to speak to your subject teachers and tutor about the subjects that interest you.
  • At the end of Key Stage 3 you should have a one-to-one meeting with your form tutor. You can discuss your subject choices and ideas for careers.
  • Record your results in your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and use it to check you are on track to achieve your subject and career goals.
