Further learning

Learning doesn't stop suddenly at the end of Year 11. It's something you'll be doing all your life. Find out what you could do after Year 11.

Continuing in education

All education providers offer a wide range of courses and learning programmes. Find out more from your online 14-19 Area Prospectus, your careers co-ordinator or Connexions personal adviser. Your choices may include:

  • a school sixth form where you'll probably know everyone
  • a sixth form college where you'll meet students from other local schools
  • a further education college with students of all ages, including adults
  • a specialist college (e.g. agriculture or music) that may be some distance from home.

Moving into training and work

Different opportunities have a different mix of learning and work. Find out more at www.direct.gov.uk/optionsafter16. Your choices may include:

  • an Apprenticeship, with on-the-job training and study to gain the qualifications you need for a specific job
  • a job with training, where the employer organises the training
  • a job with time off for study and training, where you organise training that will help you to gain a Level 2 qualification and improve your employment prospects
  • a training programme to prepare you for work
  • self-employment - very few people do this at the end of Year 11, so if this is your goal, get expert advice as soon as possible.

The demand for better qualified workers means that more people are entering higher education. There are many different routes, institutions and courses to choose from. Learning is vital to your success in work and adult life, so you can often get help with your learning costs. The type of help and amount of money you get will depend on your personal circumstances.
