Thinking ahead

Zoe is in Year 9 and has a keen interest in animals. Her career goal is to be an RSPCA inspector or animal collection officer. She's done her research and discussed her plans with her Connexions personal adviser. She knows that to train with the RSPCA she must gain good academic qualifications at levels 2 and 3. She also needs as much experience of working with animals as possible.

Zoe's research helped her to choose her key stage 4 options. She'll study a range of GCSEs at school alongside a college-based level 1 City & Guilds course in Land-based Studies. She's also creating opportunities to gain experience of working with animals. She's spent time at a local farm helping with the livestock and regularly goes riding. She's also contacted local veterinary practices to gain work experience and plans to do voluntary work with the RSPCA.

Case Study Quote

For me, it was important to find out about the career I'm interested in early on as I need to do certain subjects and get a lot of experience. I would say it's never too early to start talking about your ideas and doing research.
