What's involved? Using numbers, algebra, measurement, shapes and space. Gaining functional mathematical skills.

What's involved? Learning to speak, listen, read and write in a language other than English. Courses may cover all four skills or concentrate on two: speaking and listening, or reading and writing. The most commonly taught languages are French, German and Spanish.

What's involved? Listening to and learning about a variety of musical styles. Composing music and performing as a soloist and in a group.

What's involved? Doing physical activities, taking on different roles such as player and official, and learning how to assess your own and other people's performance. Exploring how physical activity helps to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Career ideas: Leisure centre assistant, outdoor activities instructor, sport and exercise scientist, sports coach, sports development officer, sports physiotherapist.
What's involved? Learning about the theories, concepts and research methods that are used to understand and explain human thoughts, emotions and behaviour. Exploring topical psychological issues that affect everyday life and the future of the world.
Career ideas: Educational psychologist, forensic psychologist, image consultant, market research executive, play therapist, sports psychologist.
What's involved? Learning about one or more of the major world religions and exploring moral, philosophical and spiritual issues.
Career ideas: Counsellor, equality and diversity officer, funeral director, prison officer, social care worker, youth and community worker.
What's involved? Understanding and describing the world about you and exploring how science affects your everyday life. You may be able to study biology (living things), chemistry (how materials behave), and physics (how the world developed) as separate sciences or take a science or applied science course that combines all three.
Career ideas: Beauty therapist, building control surveyor, food scientist/technologist, forensic scientist, geneticist, pharmacist.
What's involved? Learning about human society and social structures and systems. Exploring social issues to get a better understanding of the society in which you live.
