Bethany is in Year 12 at college studying a BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design. After developing Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy in her last year at school, Bethany initially had some concerns about going to college.
Before starting college Bethany applied for financial assistance with travel and was granted funding for a taxi to and from college each day.
'I am able to contact the taxi company and change the times if I need to. They are very flexible and adapt to what I need. The taxi drops me at the college entrance so I don't have to walk any long distances.'
Bethany's Connexions personal adviser informed the college of her difficulties before she started the course and as a result her classroom was moved to enable easy lift access. The lessons are also organised so that she rarely has to move between classes. In addition, Bethany has been granted funding for computer equipment.
The assistance that Bethany has received has relieved many of her initial concerns and has meant she has not been disadvantaged at college due to her disability.
"I was worried about my mobility and how I was going to manage getting around college. It was important that the classrooms would be accessible and that I would be able to use the lifts."
