Packing Operative/Manager

This job belongs to job family > Manufacturing and Production

Packing operatives (also known as packers) pack products to protect them while they are being transported, to preserve perishable items such as food, and to give them an identifiable and attractive appearance for display.

Packers wrap and pack all kinds of product, including food and drink, medicines, toiletries, clothing and footwear, furniture and furnishings, electronic and electrical equipment, construction materials, engineering equipment and chemicals.

Packing managers run packing operations. The role can include:

  • drawing up work schedules
  • supervising packing operatives
  • making sure that tasks are completed safely, to quality standards and on time
  • recruiting staff and organising staff training
  • dealing with delivery companies and customers
  • planning machine maintenance work.

Packing operatives and managers often work shifts, including evenings, nights and weekends. Part-time work is common and overtime is often available.

Packing staff normally work in manufacturing areas or warehouses. Some environments are clean, light and airy, while others can be hot, cold, dusty or noisy. Managers spend some of their time in an office. Packing operatives spend most of their working day sitting or standing and the work often involves bending, lifting, carrying and loading.

Salaries range from around £9,000 to £18,000 a year for a packer and between around £20,000 and £60,000 for a manager.

A packing operative should be:

  • able to follow instructions
  • good at working with his or her hands
  • able to work quickly and carefully
  • willing to carry out repetitive tasks.

A packing manager should:

  • fully understand packing processes
  • have good organisational skills
  • be able to manage and motivate a team
  • have good communication skills
  • be able to work to deadlines.

Packing operatives and packing managers work for a wide range of organisations throughout the UK, including manufacturers, retailers, distribution and storage companies and contract packing firms.

Packing operatives do not usually need any qualifications. However, some key skills qualifications, GCSEs or the Diploma in manufacturing and product design could be useful. Previous experience of practical work can be helpful.

It may be possible to enter this work through an Apprenticeship.

There is no set route to become a packing manager. Some managers may start as packing operatives and work their way up, but some employers may require qualifications such as an HNC/HND or degree. Useful subjects include engineering, manufacturing and management.

Packing operatives train on the job, working alongside experienced colleagues. Initial training usually includes manual handling, packing procedures and health and safety. Managers may work towards qualifications in management and leadership.

With experience, packing operatives may progress to supervisory roles. In some cases, it may be possible to gain promotion to a managerial position. Experienced packing managers may progress into more senior roles or move into other areas of management.
