Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the concept that areas in the feet and hands, known as reflexes, correspond to different parts of the body. Reflexologists aim to stimulate these reflexes by applying pressure to the reflex points on the hands or feet.
Working hours for reflexologists can vary. Many offer sessions during the evenings or at weekends. Many work part time. They work in a range of settings. Some have treatment rooms in their own homes or in complementary therapy centres. They may also work in fitness centres, beauty therapy centres, hair salons, health spas, luxury hotels and on cruise ships. Reflexologists may also work in hospices and care homes.
Salaries range from around £14,000 to £35,000 a year. Most reflexologists are self-employed, so their income depends on the number of clients. Outgoings must be taken into account.

There are about 32,000 reflexologists practising in the UK. Most are self-employed, but some are employed in private clinics and treatment centres.
There are usually no formal entry requirements but students must be able to produce written assignments and cope with the study of human anatomy and physiology.
Many colleges and private training organisations offer short courses in reflexology. These give a basic introduction to the therapy and may help an individual to decide whether they are interested in further study, but they are not designed for people wishing to practise as professionals.
Many professional reflexology courses are available part time, but they also demand a great deal of home study and practice.
Most of the reflexology membership organisations accredit, recommend or run their own courses, and several universities and colleges offer foundation degrees or BSc degrees in, or with modules on, reflexology.
Training in other complementary therapies allows reflexologists to offer a wider service to clients. There may be opportunities to work overseas, but it is important to check that UK qualifications are recognised in the country where the reflexologist intends to work.Look up your local 14-19 prospectus to find courses and qualifications in your local area:
