Painter and Decorator

This job belongs to job family > Building and Construction

Painters and decorators use a wide range of paints, varnishes, wallpapers and other coverings to protect and enhance indoor and outdoor surfaces, including plaster, metal and wood. They can work on domestic houses, commercial properties, hospitals and schools, large structures like bridges and heritage sites.

The work can include:

  • discussing clients' requirements and presenting different decorating options
  • measuring surfaces and providing quotes
  • preparing surfaces fully
  • applying products, including primers, sealants and paint, and hanging wall coverings
  • maintaining a clean, tidy workspace.

Industrial painters work on steel and concrete structures, usually removing old paint with abrasive blasting methods before applying new coatings with industrial paint spraying equipment.

Painters and decorators usually work around 40-hour weeks, Monday to Friday. Overtime may be available. Some commercial jobs may need to be done overnight or at weekends. This trade often involves working from ladders or raised platforms, or cradles and safety harnesses on industrial projects. Wearing personal protective equipment, like masks and overalls, is advisable.

Salaries may range from between £8,639 and £14,439 for apprentices aged under 19 to over £23,000 a year.

A painter and decorator should be:

  • practical, skilled and creative
  • reasonably fit and healthy
  • confident working at heights
  • aware of health and safety
  • interested in décor, design and colour.

There are opportunities for painters and decorators throughout the UK. Employers range from small businesses, employing one or two people, to large organisations working on private, commercial and industrial contracts. Many are self-employed.

No formal entry qualifications are needed. Employers may prefer candidates with some GCSEs. Maths, English and design and technology are all useful. The Diploma in construction and the built environment may be relevant. Apprenticeships in painting and decorating are a common route in.

Trainees may work towards qualifications such as NVQs in decorative finishing and industrial painting occupations. Those interested in heritage work (pre-1919 buildings) can train in specialist skills to achieve the Heritage Skills NVQ Level 3 in painting and decorating. Any painters and decorators working on a construction site must have a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) card, which requires passing a health and safety test.

Large companies may offer progression into team leader, estimating or construction management jobs. Many experienced painters and decorators establish their own businesses.
