Influenced by work experience

Tom's in Year 12 and doing a BTEC National in Music Technology and Music Practice. He loves playing drums in his band. For a long time he dreamed of becoming a roadie or working in a recording studio. But he's discovered that recording is highly technical and now he's rethinking his career plans.

In Year 10, Tom did some work experience in a primary school. He enjoyed the variety of activities and he liked helping the children to explore ideas and express themselves. Now he's started working as a tutor with junior bands at a youth group. He helps them practise every week and organises gigs. Tom says:

'I am an outgoing, sociable person and now I want to find out if I would be good at working with children in a nursery school as there are Apprenticeships available, such as in Children's Care, Learning and Development. I think my music skills could be used to encourage children to get involved and have fun. Working with children could be just what I am looking for!'

Case Study Quote

I am going on a taster week which includes two days' work experience in a nursery school so I can test out my plans. I have talked to my Connexions personal adviser and looked for information on youth work.
