Benefiting from work-related learning

Jessica's in Year 11 and in the second year of a work-related learning programme. She spends three days a week in school studying for GCSEs and two days a week on placement at an animal sanctuary. As part of her placement she also studies with another learning provider to gain work-related qualifications. She's already gained certificates in First Aid, Health and Safety and Food Hygiene.

The placement has taught Jessica how to look after and care for different animals. She especially loves working with horses and ponies and quickly volunteered to work at the sanctuary at weekends. She did so well in her placement and as a volunteer that the sanctuary offered her a Saturday job.

Over the two years, Jessica has grown in confidence and decided that she wants a career working with animals. Now she's looking forward to starting a Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Horse Care at a local college.

Don't be afraid to give something new a go. The work-related programme has given me the chance to meet new people and try new things. I now know what I want to do in the future and I'm getting the experience and learning new skills to get me there.
