Luke's doing a Foundation Certificate in Construction at key stage 4. He decided that he'd like to become a plumber and started a work placement to improve his chances of success. His excellent performance in the workplace prompted his employer to offer him an Apprenticeship in plumbing.
Being a practical learner, Luke's keen to learn 'on the job' rather than doing a full-time course at college. The Apprenticeship involves four days in the workplace and one day at college studying for an NVQ Level 1 in Plumbing. Luke had to take an aptitude test, which he passed. He's now looking forward to working full-time and starting his Apprenticeship at the end of Year 11. He would recommend an Apprenticeship to other practical learners.
Doing an Apprenticeship means you get a qualification and work experience at the same time. This makes it easier to get a job when the training finishes as employers can see that you have got both.
