Ryan is currently studying a BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care. As part of the course he recently undertook a period of work experience at a residential care home for the elderly. Ryan was already interested in a career in the care sector, but was undecided which job he would like to do:
'I had done some work experience at a nursery in Year 10 which I enjoyed, but on the course we had been learning about working with the elderly and I thought this sounded good as well. I decided to try it out.'
Ryan spent a very successful few weeks at the residential home and his employer was impressed with his attitude. He received a very good report and it confirmed his interest in working with the elderly:
'I'm really pleased I did the work experience. Now I know what the work is like and what's involved. I enjoyed it and it made me think I'd like to do it as a career.'
Ryan is now planning to apply for an Apprenticeship in a residential home when he leaves sixth form and he will continue his training on the job. Having some experience of the work will be regarded very positively by employers and should help him to find a suitable placement.
