What choices to make?

It's your future - explore it!

Ever thought about what you'll do in the future? Whatever stage you're at - whether you're in Year 9, or weighing up your post-16 options - it's never too early to start thinking about what you want to do!

The Secretary of State for Education, Ed Balls was joined by Manchester United Football Manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Monday 26th October 2009 to announce a government strategy to help young people find their way in the world and make decisions that will set them on the path to success.

Through a special interactive kiosk, young people who attended the event got to learn about:

  • The participation age being raised to 17 in 2013 and to 18 in 2015. This means you'll remain in education or training for longer to help you get the future you want. Plus, you'll get to choose the right type of learning for you.
  • To make things simpler, by 2013 many of you will be able to get qualifications by one of four routes: GCSEs and A/AS levels, Diplomas, Apprenticeships or, if you need support, Foundation Learning.
  • An Apprenticeship will be available for every eligible young person by 2013. As part of the 'Backing Young Britain' campaign, employers will provide more work experience opportunities.
  • The September Guarantee will offer every 16 and 17-year-old a place in education or training.
  • Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for young people who need financial support with their learning.

You can see some of the pictures of the event on Flickr and a video on YouTube.
