What you need to know

Finding the right job for you, your interests, experience, skills and personality can be tricky. Most people need advice to get them started and to make the most of their abilities. Here are some useful tips of what you can do:

What you can do

  • Think about what you would really like to do. Browse the Worktrain website at www.worktrain.co.uk and the Jobs4U website at www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u to discover all the different kinds of jobs out there.
  • Compare this to what you're qualified to do. If there's a gap you might need to look at training - see learndirect's site at www.learndirect.co.uk which will show you details of courses and give you some inspiration.
  • Find out about New Deal, it's a flexible scheme with lots of opportunities to help kick start your career. Visit www.newdeal.gov.uk for more details.
  • Talk to your local job centre for advice on jobs and benefits.
  • Give your CV a brush up using the CV Builder on www.worktrain.co.uk
  • Don't get disheartened. If you feel like you're getting nowhere fast, talk to friends, family or a Connexions Direct Adviser for support. Most people find job hunting a challenging and difficult task, but you are worth the effort and your future is important.
Advisers are here between 8am and 2am. Talk to us in confidence >>
