Work

So, you're working

Unemployment and redundancy

What you need to know

Being out of work is never nice but it is something that most people will go through during their working life.

Whether you have been sacked, laid off or made redundant at work, the important thing is to get back out there and start looking for a new job as soon as possible.

All young people are entitled to exactly the same job opportunities as anyone else. If you feel that you have been unfairly discriminated against, because of disability, race or gender, you should report it straight away, as the law is there to help and protect you.

What you can do

  • Start looking for a new job as soon as possible.
  • Write to companies you are interested in working for and see if they have any vacancies.
  • Check the vacancies section in your local newspapers.
  • Visit job sites on the internet. Some of the biggest jobs search sites are www.monster.co.uk and www.fish4jobs.co.uk.
  • If you are aged between 18 and 25 you could be eligible for New Deal. New Deal was created to help unemployed people back into work. To find out more call New Deal on 0845 606 2626.
  • Your local job centre will be able to help you with claiming job seekers allowance. The staff there will tell you if you are eligible and how to go about claiming.
Advisers are here between 8am and 2am. Talk to us in confidence >>
