Before getting a job
Help writing a CV
What you need to know
If you don't have access to your own pc use a friend's, school's, college's or try your local Connexions Centre or library.
You need to record the dates you were at school or college. Write down all your qualifications and any periods of work and see whether your recent or previous employer will give you a reference.
If you are applying for your first job it is useful to try and get a personal reference from a teacher for example.
Firstly, jot down details about the job you are applying for so that you can tailor your CV to match their requirement.
If you are a disabled young person, you need to decide if you are going to disclose your disability. You are only obliged to disclose your disability by law if it may cause health and safety issues for you or others.
What you can do
- Before writing your own CV look at examples of others; friends and family or online. Decide on the most suitable format of CV for the job you are applying for.
- Use the following guidelines and make sure that your CV is:
- Typed - if you don't have your own equipment use what's available at school, college or at your local Connexions Centre and local library.
- Clear - don't try to be fancy keep it black print on white paper in an easy to read font such as Arial 12.
- Logical - start with your name and contact details, work through your school, college and any work.
- Accurate - proof read it and make sure it makes sense and there are no spelling mistakes.
- Concise - keep it short - 2 pages if possible.
- Above all be honest in your CV - remember you will have to support anything you have written if you get an interview.
