Applying for a passport

What you need to know

Passport interviews are a new part of the application process to protect an individual's identity. They are required by all customers, aged 16 or over, who are applying for a passport for the first time.

You will be expected to complete the usual passport application form before being called for an interview. This will involve a series of additional questions to establish who you are so that your identity is protected.

If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you should allow 6 weeks for the application process including your interview.

What you can do

  • You will still need to fill in a passport application form which is available from a Post Office
  • Read the form through carefully, checking what documents you need to include with your application
  • Find out where your nearest Photo Booth is and get two recent photographs taken
  • Once completed get your parent, carer or someone you trust to check everything. Make sure you have the funds to pay the application fee
Find out where your local interview office is by visiting http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/about-us.asp
  • Don't be nervous! The interview process is designed to protect you and all interviews are conducted in a friendly manner
