You and the Police

What you need to know

Police can stop you in the street if they suspect you of having broken or being about to break the law. They can also search your outer clothing if they suspect you are carrying drugs or offensive weapons. They must tell you their name, station where they are based and the reason they stopped you.

You can be taken to the station and questioned under certain circumstances and you can be prosecuted in a Youth Court.

What you can do

  • The best thing to do if you are stopped by the police is stay calm and not get abusive or angry.
  • If you are arrested and you are under 17 you must have a parent or carer or other appropriate adult with you before you are questioned.
  • Whatever your age you are entitled to speak to a free duty solicitor.
