Your rights

When can I?

At what age can I...?

What you need to know

You might not be seen as an adult in the eyes of the law until the age of 18, but as you get older you are legally allowed to do certain things. That can also mean you are legally responsible for your actions.

What can you do

  • This section tells you at what age you can do things like get a job, buy and drink alcohol, legally have sex, get married or drive different types of vehicles.
  • For example at 14 you can enter a pub, but you cannot buy or drink alcohol. At the age of 16 you can have beer or cider whilst eating a meal in a restaurant or an eating area of a pub, but not in a bar. At the age of 18, you can buy and drink alcohol in a bar.
  • Remember, you have a responsibility to know what you can legally do at your age, so it's a good idea to check out the full web page for a summary and to take a look at some of the websites we've provided.
