My parents are splitting up

What you need to know

If your parents or carers are splitting up it can be a distressing and upsetting time for everybody. The most important thing to remember is that it is not your fault. They will both still love you. It might take a bit of time, but things will get better.

What you can do

If your parents or carers are splitting up there are lots if things that you might want to try to help you feel better:

  • Try talking to someone about how you are feeling. Sharing your feelings can make you feel a lot better.
  • If you don't want to speak to someone try writing your feelings down in a diary - this can be a good way of getting things off your chest.
  • Speak to your parents or carers about what is really going on and what arrangements are being made so that you can spend time with both of them.
