What you need to know

A good friend is someone that will be there for you whatever. They will listen to you and give you good advice - even if sometimes you don't want to hear it! In return you will be able to do the same for them.

What you can do

If you want to get the best out of your friendships there needs to be some respect and compromise on both sides.

  • Accept that you both have your own opinions on certain things - if you disagree on something - agree to disagree and move on.
  • Form your own opinions - you'll be more respected for doing it.
  • Make sure that you don't feel pressured into doing things that you are not comfortable with just because some of your friends are doing them.
  • If you start a new school, job or university don't worry that you will be the 'new' person. You will soon make new friends and will still have your old ones too.
  • If you can't see your mates as often as you would like to keep in touch by phone, texting and email.
