Getting Into Debt

What you need to know

Whether you owe friends money you don't have or can't pay off your credit cards, debt can keep you awake at night and easily spiral out of control.

It's important to keep your money and spending under control, most people borrow money at some time especially for unexpected expenses, but debt can become a concern when you owe more than you can afford to repay.

What you can do

  • Make a positive decision to tackle your debt and get your money back under control
  • Get help, confide in someone you can trust, or contact one of the help organisations listed below. There are people who understand and can help you to get back in control
  • Work out exactly how much you owe, to who and what's the most important debt to repay first
  • Consider where you can make cut backs and how much you can realistically afford to repay each week or month
  • If you can, keep talking to the people you owe money to. They might have some helpful ideas and it will help you to worry less
  • Don't be alone - there are lots of people who are ready to help you - you only need to ask
