Leaving home

What you need to know

Leaving home is a big step, so make it as fun as possible by thinking things through first so you can really enjoy your new independence.

Whether you are disabled or non-disabled there will be new responsibilities to consider. You'll find that you'll have to be organised to have enough time and money to pay the bills and carry out household chores.

What you can do

  • Work out a realistic budget so you know what you can afford - there are lot of expenses to consider as well as your rent.

  • Consider who you want to live with, or if you want your own place.

  • Think about your location, transport and parking requirements.

  • Remember that you'll have bills to pay and living costs such as food and transport - not just money for going out!

  • Work out when you want to move and if there is enough time to do so.

  • Is renting the best option for you - should you be considering buying a property.

  • To live independently as a disabled person you will be entitled to some help from your Local Social Services Department and others.
