Puberty

What you need to know

Puberty is the name given to the changes that your body goes through as you grow from a child into a young adult. At times, these changes can make you feel frightened, awkward and embarrassed but there is no need to feel any of these things.

What is happening to you is normal and everyone has to go through exactly the same experiences as part of growing up.

Some of the changes that your body will go through can seem daunting and strange. You may end up feeling self-conscious about your body and confused with what is happening

What you can do

  • The best thing that you can do is to get clued up and find out all about exactly what is going to happen to you and your body. Knowing what to expect can make everything less stressful for you.
  • Try to keep your diet healthy and nutritious to support your body and avoid crash dieting or weight-training until you have stopped growing.
  • It's time to start thinking about your personal hygiene. During puberty you will start to release sweat in response to physical exercise, stress and emotion. Washing twice a day and using deodorant should control body odour and prevent any embarrassing situations.
