What you need to know

You need to register at a doctor's surgery before you can use it. This can be done at your first visit, but it's a good idea to register before you get ill, so all your records are there when the Dr needs them.

You should visit the dentists every 6 months for a check up. Spaces at an NHS dental practise can be difficult to find, so it's worth finding out before you get toothache.

You should have an eye examination by your optician every 2 years, or more often if required. This will ensure that both the health of your eyes and changes in vision can be monitored and any problems detected.

You can get advice on contraception from your doctor, or ask NHS Direct for information and advice or details on your nearest Family Planning Clinic.

What you can do

  • Keep the NHS Direct helpline number somewhere easy to find, like on the fridge or next to the phone.
  • If you or someone close to you is feeling ill, ask for help. Your health is important and the helpline is 24 hour, so you can call any time of day or night
  • Don't forget, if you think something is urgent, you can still call the emergency services on 999.
  • If you have an Organ Donor card, make sure your next of kin knows your wishes.
Advisers are here between 8am and 2am. Talk to us in confidence >>
